The Green Flash - Truth or Fiction?

Caribe Tesoro is without question, the best place on West Bay to see a Green Flash. Now I'm not just saying that because I'm going to give you scientific proof. But first let's answer that question you might have.

Is a Green Flash real? The answer is yes. (Science geeks click here…)

If you had a great teacher and learned a little bit about light when you were a kid, they might have given you a prism to look through.

That prism breaks up light into different colors. A rainbow does the same thing.

A Green Flash channels the green wavelengths… and you see an amazing phenomenon.

As the sun gets close to the horizon, on clear days with very little haze, light on the horizon is not scattered and that lends to a pure refraction.

On most clear days at sunset there is a green rim at the top of the sun as it sets. This can be seen in a magnified picture.

As there is so much blue being absorbed by the ocean and the sky, the green escapes above the red-orange rim of the sun. As these are actually complimentary colors (red/green)... we are able to see the contrast for about 2 seconds.

So why am I saying that Hacienda Caribe Tesoro gives you the best place to see a green flash in all of West Bay?

First ... The green flash is best seen at sea level. Our restaurant the Sunset Grill is over the water and is at sea level. The dining area is built on the pier. There are no obstructions and no people to get in front of you.

Second ... The Boardwalk has seating that is just above sea level.

Third ... There are no beaches in front of our view with lots of people in line of site. That's great for two reasons: no one is in your way and there are fewer sand flies to bite your tender ankles.

Fourth ... The views from our public terraces give just a slight angle to the horizon line. This can lead to a different kind of Green Flash due to the angle and the conditions of the water... It's often easier to see and our west veranda is big enough for everyone...

and Fifth ... We face west and the sunset is always directly in front of Hacienda Caribe Tesoro.

One of the myths around the green flash is in "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End”... In pirate lore it's told that when a green flash occurs, a soul has come back from the dead.

The other places on West Bay don't offer the features that allow us ability to share this amazing spectacle with everyone. They don't have a covered pier over the water or a boardwalk or a shared veranda facing the sun. That’s not to say that you won’t see one… but if you want the most options and you are looking for a green flash there is us... and well... US..
